This is how to install Kodi for Windows. For general users, it is recommended to use the stable build of Kodi, which is currently Kodi v20.1 Nexus. To obtain Kodi, you have the option of downloading it from the Windows store, which will automatically update the application for you, or you can opt to download an executable installer file (.exe).
Install Kodi for Windows
To install Kodi on your Windows computer, simply download the executable installer file (.exe) from the downloads page and follow the usual steps for installing any Windows program.
While there is no distinction between the Windows store version and the downloadable .exe version of Kodi, choosing the latter option provides you with greater control over updates. Upgrading Kodi
Generally, upgrading Kodi by installing a new version over an existing one should be trouble-free. However, we suggest performing a fresh install if you are jumping over two or more versions. Refer to our Backup guide for instructions on how to save your existing Kodi data folder as a backup.
If you are upgrading to a point release of the same version, you can install it over your existing installation without any issues. Before upgrading Kodi, it is crucial to:
- Backup your data as per our Backup guide.
- Confirm that your computer still meets Kodi’s minimum requirements for Supported hardware.
- Check if your add-ons or skins have been updated to function with the new version of Kodi. If the upgrade is a point release (such as v20.0 to v20.1), all add-ons and skins should continue to work without any problems.

Windows Defender
Windows Defender SmartScreen is a built-in feature of Windows designed to prevent the installation of unrecognized software.
If you attempt to download the Kodi installer shortly after a new version is released. Windows Defender SmartScreen may block the installer. In such a scenario, you can proceed with the Kodi installation by clicking on ‘More info’ followed by ‘Run anyway’ to override the blockage.
