AVI file cant play in DIVX or Windows

download codecThe AVI file cant play in DIVX or Windows again.  I have some avi files that won’t play in divx or windows media player, what do i do? The question is, what kind of a codec do i need for this to play. This is a common issue as it will depend on what encoding was used when the movie was made or saved.

AVI file cant play in DIVX or Windows

If an AVI file cannot play in DivX or Windows Media Player, it may be because the codec used to compress the video in the AVI file is not supported by those players. Firstly you can see the article on no video but sound on this webiste. Most times it is a codec problem that needs to be corrected. Check your player software and ensure that it is up to date. The next option is to check what codec was used for the encoding of the video. See also if you can play the movie in VLC player or the older Media Classic Player. Most times those two will play the video even when not completed downloaded or damaged.

It’s also worth noting that AVI is a container format and can contain various video and audio codecs, so it is important to know what codecs are inside that specific AVI file.

Most Common AVI Codecs

AVI is a container format, which means that it can hold video and audio encoded with various codecs. See also the article on Windows Media only plays on Divx as well as the one on playing avi video in Windows 7. Some of the most common codecs used in AVI files are:

  1. MPEG-4: This codec is commonly used for compressing and decompressing video in AVI files. It is known for its high compression ratio and high video quality.
  2. DivX: This codec is commonly used for compressing and decompressing video in AVI files. It is known for its high compression ratio and high video quality.
  3. XviD: This codec is commonly used for compressing and decompressing video in AVI files. It is similar to DivX, but it is an open-source codec, which means that it is free to use.
  4. MJPEG: This codec is commonly used for compressing and decompressing video in AVI files. It is known for its high video quality, but it has a low compression ratio, which means that the file size is larger.
  5. Cinepak: is an older codec, but still can be found in some AVI files. It provides a good balance of video quality and file size.
  6. Indeo: is an older codec but still can be found in some AVI files. It was popular in the 1990s but now it’s not widely supported.

It’s also worth noting that AVI files can contain multiple codecs, so it is possible for an AVI file to use more than one codec, and you may need to install multiple codecs to play the file. See also the LAV Filters for inofrmation.

  1. Was gonna suggest K-Lite, but…. Try VLC Media Player, or RealPlayer. They both do a good job of playing files other players won’t. Also, the file may be damaged/corrupt. Hope this helps.

  2. Install Gomplayer, go to
preferences – others – select all
    File Types – Codec

Now you can play .avi files, divx files. .flv. .wmx. .mov. mpeg and many modre
