Download the x265 encoder here. This much like other encoders is a free as well as open-source HEVC (High Efficiency Video Coding) video compression encoder. You might want to also see the HEVC Video Extension as well as the HEIF Image Extension which uses the same principle as here. The x265 encoder compresses video files to reduce their file size while maintaining high visual quality.
x265 Encoder
Much like other x265 video encoders it is used to encode video into the HEVC format. This format is far more efficient than the older H.264 format. This mainly as it can provide higher video quality at lower bit rates. Most of the encoders are there to improve the quality while making the files smaller. Much like an audio encoder such as the LAME MP3 Encoder as well as the LameXP as well as the LameDropXPd which are well known for audio encoding. The x265 Encoder is a well known video encoder.
New Standard x265
The X265 is the next generation of codecs much like the HEVC standard. This is the upgrade to the older x264 standard. We are now seeing the move to the HEVC standard (High Efficiency Video Coding). You can see these links above. The HEVC standard is very high and you will note that this new x265 standard supports resolutions of up to 8192×4320. This was first released in 2013. Much like the newer HEVC standard which was originally designed to obtain data compression with a ratio of up to 1000:1. Use the DXVA Checker to see if your computer can use the new standard.
Improvements to the Standard
The new standard for the codec will encode the video into a HEVC format. This has been done by using a new technique where it breaks up the picture in blacks of different sizes. This will depend on the complexity of the areas. This is what they termed motion estimation. Since the x265 is based on the x264 codec it still uses many of the older but improved technology such as the wavefront processing. These now far exceed H.264’s abilities.
Features Included
- Full prediction and transform quad-tree recursion supported
- There is also CABAC entropy coding
- Then adaptive B-frame placement
- There is also weighted prediction for P slices
- Multiple reference frames
- Also useful is the scene cut detection, and
- The rate control: constant quantizer, constant quality, single pass ABR, optional VBV.
Consider which software to use if you are going to use this encoder. There is the 2015 and 2019 versions. There is not much difference between the two however they do use different compilers. See also other software such as the MPC-BE.
