FFmpeg

FFmpeg as you will know is a free, open-source software library for handling multimedia files. these include video as well as audio files.   • First open the Start menu and search for “Environment Variables”
  • Then click on the “Edit the system environment variables”
  • The in the System Properties window, click on the “Environment Variables” button
  • Also under “System variables”, scroll down and find the “Path” variable, then click on the “Edit” button
  • Then click on the “New” button and type in the path to the FFmpeg binary folder (for example, “C:\ffmpeg\bin”). Make sure to include the “bin” folder, as that is where the FFmpeg executable files are located.
  • Click on “OK” to save the changes and close all open windows.

You will then be able to run the commands from the command prompt. So without having to navigate to the binary folder first. You can then also verify if you have set the environment variable correctly. This you can do by simply opening a new command prompt and typing “ffmpeg” and press enter.

Install and use ffmpeg

So to use it, you can open a command prompt. Then navigate to the folder where your media files are located, and then use FFmpeg commands to convert, edit, or stream the files.

As an example, to convert a video file from one format to another, you can use the following command:

ffmpeg -i inputfile.mp4 outputfile.avi

This command will convert the inputfile.mp4 to outputfile.avi using default codecs.

You can also use FFmpeg to extract audio from a video file, using the following command:

ffmpeg -i inputfile.mp4 -vn -acodec copy outputfile.aac

This command will extract the audio from the inputfile.mp4 and save it as outputfile.aac using the aac codec.
